Oswald/Taubenfeld/Formanek Trio
This concert will be a meeting between three generations of free improvisors.
Margaux Oswald is a pianist of French-Filipina origin, born in Geneva, and currently based in Copenhagen. She has played the piano since the age of 5, and is now committed to the art of free improvisation. Her solo piano debut album Dysphotic Zone, released on Clean Feed Records, was chosen as one of the best solo album of 2022 by the New York City Jazz Record.
She is one of the new members of the artist-run label and collective ILK in Copenhagen.
Oswald’s latest project, Collateral Damage, an international septet with three double basses, two electric guitars, drums and grand piano, will have its first album released on Clean Feed Records in 2024.
Born in the Galil region, Northern Israel, Ziv Taubenfeld started playing the clarinet as part of his primary school orchestra and continued with studies at the local conservatory. Following the attraction to low sounds, he added the bass clarinet as a second instrument that soon became his main focus. Taubenfeld's interest in improvised music grew bigger after meeting the influential saxophone player Albert Beger, who opened up a path that led to further studies of the bass clarinet with Michael Moore in the Netherlands. Amsterdam's improvised music scene turned out to be a creative home, resulting in collaborations that continue to this day. Taubenfeld is currently based in Lisbon.
Born in San Francisco, Michael Formanek has made quite a name for himself as a first-call bassist in the East Coast scene he calls home. Formanek has worked with several generations of musicians throughout his distinguished career: as a teenager in the 1970s he toured with Tony Williams and Joe Henderson; and in the ‘80s he played with Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, and Freddie Hubbard. During the ‘90s he played a key role in the fertile Downtown scene, leading his own ensembles while working closely with Tim Berne and his associates. Currently, Formanek is most often found working in the collective trio Thumbscrew, with Mary Halvorson and Tomas Fujiwara, and in the numerous outfits that the trio serves as a rhythm section.
